Welcome to the 2015-16 Art Room!

Thanks to everyone who has donated supplies to the Art Room so far this year!  If you would like to donate, check out the Wish List on my site for an updated list of needed supplies!

One week into the new school year, and we are already having lots of fun in the Art Room! I had a blast meeting all the newest Dolphins during their brief orientation to the Art Room on Thursday and Friday.  Most of the students seemed very excited about art, and they are clearly raring to create!  We talked a bit about how things "work" in the Art Room, and then read Peter Reynolds' book, "The Dot," about a little girl who doesn't realize she's a fantastic artist until she makes her first mark on a blank sheet of paper.

This week, the kinders will work on their own creations starting with just a mark that I give them.

The 1st through 5th graders each created a self-portrait on a 4"x 6" index card and colored it using only one of the primary or secondary colors (fifth grade portraits were done in two analogous colors - colors next to each other on the color wheel).  Over the next week, I'll be arranging these four hundred plus self-portraits into a large mosaic that transitions through all six colors in rainbow order and shows off all the "colorful" characters we have at HES this year!  Look for it in the cafeteria!

Be sure to check this blog regularly for posts about student work, kid-friendly art exhibits, and new art enrichment links.  Here's to a great year at Hillsborough Elementary!
