3rd Grade Ocean and Forest Silhouettes with Color Value

Having learned about color value in 2nd grade, students painted these silhouettes set against a background of the sun shining down through the sea or the moon in a night forest.  They painted the color values first by starting with a white sun/moon near the center and adding increasing amounts of blue to their white acrylic paint.  In two more class sessions, students added the forest and ocean scenes, first in pencil, then filling in with black acrylic paint. They used small brushes for the more detailed parts of their paintings, a first experience for many.  As usual, the students rose to the challenge of this involved project!
