2nd Grade Ceramic Owls

This lesson, in addition to giving the 1st graders a chance to create with clay this year, was about the art element of texture.   Students were provided with a round slab of clay and a circular marker cap. By pressing it in at an angle, the marker cap was used to give the bottom half of the clay circle a texture resembling feathers.  Then students folded over the sides of their circle to make their owl's "wings" and the top of their circle to form a face. The corners of this face were pinched and pulled to make "ears" for their owls. Using the same marker cap and a pencil end for the pupils, the artists made eyes, then used their marker cap to continue the feather texture on the wings, too.  In a second session, students used glazes to give their owls color.  While some chose to stick with browns, grays, and white for a more realistic color scheme, most got a little more creative with their owl colors!
