2nd Grade "Warm Colored Planets in Cool Space"

I use this lesson to as an introduction to the concept of cool ("ocean") and warm ("sunset" or "fire") colors.  After watching a video that features several real works employing cool and warm colors to elicit specific emotions, students draw and paint several "planets" with warm colors (using tempura block paints).  I encourage them to think about balance as they distribute their circles around the page.  To develop the "space" theme a bit more, I also asked them to add stars, spaceships (including flying saucers, of course), and or comets to their backgrounds.  In a second session, since I also use this project to teach a little about drawing different facial expressions (mostly by changing mouth and eyebrow position and size), they give each of their planets a little personality with a face. (I supply the students with a sheet of several cartoon facial expression examples that they are free to copy or modify as they choose).  After adding the expressions to their planets, they paint their backgrounds using only cool colors.  The result is these boldly colored paintings and some newfound knowledge about how color can have "temperature."
